Shanghai Auto Show - Photo Report

After a period in China, where i had the luck of going to the Shanghai Auto Show, i am back in the saddle of EV Sales, and ready to share some of the most interesting plug-ins  of the Show.

At least those that i managed to cover, as the Shanghai Auto Show is YUUUGGGEEE, imagine 5 times the size of the Geneva Auto Show and you have an idea of the size of it.

BYD Song: Now with PHEV and BEV versions, with the first doing 0-100 kms/h in 4.9 secs and the second having 300 kms range, specs of this VW Tiguan-sized crossover are up with the best. Now about those vanilla looks...

BYD Yuan - The smallest of BYD Crossovers has a rather funky look, sometimes reminding the Renault Captur, other times the Ford Ecosport, 100% BYD are the specs shared with its larger Song sibling. Yep, this small Crossover is said to make 0-100 kms/h in 4.9 seconds on the PHEV version. Wicked!

BYD Tang 100 - Now with fancier badges and longer range ("100" refers to the electric range), the Tang is something General Motors could have done if they had decided to put the Voltec drivetrain in one of their Crossovers/SUV's. But because they haven't, this is currently the only SUV with decent electric range on the market. The 500 hp coming from the drivetrain are just a bonus...

BYD Song 7 - First model penned by the former Audi Designer Wolfgang Egger, the Song 7 is a rather fancy approach to the 7-seater MPV theme, launched with gas-only versions, it is said that next year it will offer a PHEV version, probably doing 0-100 kms/h in five seconds. Be careful when taking kids/inlaws with you...

Changan Benni EV: Toyota Yaris-sized EV, with 210 kms range. Quality design, but needs more electric range to stand out.

VW Phideon GTE - A good idea and better looks, but the 14kWh battery only allows 50 kms electric range.

Zotye E200 - One of the stars in the Chinese EV ranking, it doesn't look bad on the quality department, as for looks...

...The Zotye E30 looks better. If it only had the E200 sturdiness...

Zotye Z500 EV - Turns out, Zotye also wants to make decent electric sedans!

Cadillac CT6 PHEV - Big barge with big battery (18 kWh), allowing 60 kms electric range for 80.000 USD. Worst things have came out of Cadillac.

Link & Co - The most popular stand at the Shanghai Auto Show, irreverence was the token word here, a sort of Smart meets Mini. In the future, this could be the right counter weight to the serious, premium Volvo in the Geely Group. Said to have a plug-in hybrid in 2018, this could be the first Chinese brand to really breakout in Western markets. As for the divisive looks, there was a time when the Nissan Juke looked more like a Lunar Lander than a Crossover, now it is everywhere...

NIO ES8 - The former NextEV startup transformed itself in the Nio brand and presented the ES8, a 100% electric full-size SUV, a rather handsome beast scheduled to be in production mode next year. Great stand by the way, reminding a bit of Ikea philosophy. Wish all the best to them!

BAIC EX400: Beijing Auto is serious in beating BYD and this is possibly their most competitive product to date, with 400 kms range, the BAIC Crossover has a critical selling point over the all-electric BYD Song and Yuan. The ball is now on your side, BYD...

For those that always felt that the world missed a plug-in hybrid version of the Mercedes G Wagen, here is the closest you can get to that, the BJ80 PHEV, a Chinese clone to the Mercedes G-Class with a PHEV drivetrain.

Denza EV - 400 kms electric range, Mercedes B-Class platform, plenty of space, one would think BYD would have a winner here, but it hasn't. Looking at it live, one understands why, after all design counts. A lot.

Chery e5/e7 - After years banking on small city cars to provide EV's, Chery decided to go for the "Big Boys", by launching the e5, a compact sedan (In the front) and the e7 larger sedan (In the back).

And of course a lineup of EV's in China wouldn't be complete without a Crossover. Here's the Chery model.

JAC iEV6S - A rather striking look that is let down by poor quality interiors. Time to step up, JAC.

SAIC Roewe eRX5 - Roewe is possibly the most solid and best designed Chinese brand, this VW Tiguan-sized crossover has a lot going for it.

SAIC Roewe i6 - The same can be said about the i6, a large PHEV sedan that could eventually arrive in Europe under a MG badge in a couple of years.

Mercedes GLC350e new #1 in Record Month

Record month in March in the Belgian EV Market, with 1.397 passenger cars plug-ins being registered, up 51% YoY, pulling the EV Share to a record 2.4%(!).

SUV's continue to be the Trend du Jour, with three SUV's in March Top 5 places, with the Mercedes GLC350e beating its personal best for the third time in a row and repeating the February Best Seller title, with 170 units, followed by the BMW X5 PHEV (136 units), the surprising Nissan Leaf, Third with 124 sales, its best result ever(!) in Belgium, with the two Teslas closing the Top 5, the Model X surpassed for the first time its eldest brother Model S, thanks to a record 112 deliveries. It seems the Tesla SUV is starting to live up to its promises in this SUV-loving market.

In the YTD ranking, the big news is the rise to power by the Mercedes GLC350e, surpassing the Volvo XC90 PHEV, while the Tesla Model S jumped three positions to #5 and the Nissan Leaf four places to #10.

The good news on the BEV side didn't ended there, as the Tesla Model X climbed one position to #11, while the Renault Zoe, usually an underdog in this market, jumped four positions to #13, thanks to a record 41 deliveries. It seems the ZE 40 version is helping the French model even in markets outside its comfort zone...

In the manufacturers ranking, last year leader BMW is in the leadership, with 33% (Down 4%), while the Second Placed Mercedes (17%, down 1%) benefits from the popularity of its midsize SUV and the Third Placed Volvo (12%, down 4%) is being threatened by a surging Tesla (11%).

Sales are up a healthy 50% in the Swedish LCV market, with the Kangoo ZE on top, with over 50% share, followed by an also growing (Up 79% YoY) Nissan e-NV200 Van.

On the other hand, the Peugeot Partner EV is down 50% regarding the same period last year. Poor work from the fleet sales team?

Sales are up 2% in the Norwegian LCV market, but last year leader Nissan e-NV200 is down 28% YoY.

Filling the void is the Peugeot Partner EV, up 128%, an interesting development for a model that hasn’t received any upgrade since it arrived. Is Peugeot doing big time discounts?

The same goes for Citroen, after only seven registrations in the first quarter of 2016, they now jumped to 49, considering these impressive stats from the PSA vans, it seems the French Group is betting on their electric LCVs to not be left behind on Norway’s “EV bubble”.

1-3 win for BAIC

The Chinese market had more than 32.000 new EV's zooming the streets last month, a 89% increase over the same month last year, with the annual growth rate now at 31%, the EV market share is firmly above the 1% barrier, at around 1.4%. As the year proceeds and sales expand, expect market share to rise above last year result (1.45%), maybe reaching North of 2% share.

All this while 95% of the market continues to belong to domestic brands. And of the 5% left for foreign brands, 4% belong to Tesla, with the remaining 1% divided by all other auto makers.

BAIC once again won the models and manufacturers titles in March, and with lofty goals for this year (170.000 units!) it seems Beijing Auto will be a tough cookie for BYD to beat…

Here’s March Top 5 Best Selling models individual performance:

#1 - BAIC EC180: Winning the Best Seller status for the second month in a row, this little model is making a (small) earthquake on Chinese EV sales, and it should too, as this is probably the first (Only?) little city EV that private buyers must be proud to have, with Crossover-ish looks, decent specs and interiors/equipment, the 3.605 units sold last month are proving this model is here to stay and is leading the ranking with full merit…

#2 – Zhidou D2 EV: …The same can’t be said about this little bugger, a bare-basics city vehicle that doesn’t inspire anyone to want one. Nevertheless, they continue to be sold in large quantities (3.593 units in March), possibly due to a combination of bargain-basement prices and big fleet deals.

#3 – BAIC EU260: A major player last year, where it reached #5, BAIC’s middle-of-the-road electric sedan had its best performance of the year last month, with 2.608 units, and is now looking to recover lost sales.
.

#4 – SAIC Roewe eRX5: This PHEV SUV could be to SAIC a bit like what the Tang was for BYD a while back, by delivering 2.478 units in only its third month on the market, it set a new monthly record for any SAIC model, so it seems this rather handsome and trendy Compact SUV is set to become Shanghai Auto Best Selling plug-in and possibly one of the Best Sellers of the Year.

#5 – Geely Emgrand EV: Another electric compact sedan to succeed, Volvo’s owner Geely Emgrand EV returned to the market with a bang, jumping to #5 in March, with 1.804 units, a 218% increase YoY.

Year-to-Date Ranking

In the top positions there weren’t many changes, with the most important involving SAIC models, the Roewe eRX5 jumped seven positions to Fourth, becoming not only the best-selling plug-in hybrid, but also the highest ranked SUV, while its sedan relative, the Roewe e550, was down four places to #7, is this sudden fall due to production constraints (Floor priority to the eRX5), or is demand just not there anymore?

Crossovers and SUV’s are the hottest automotive trend in China and the plug-in market follows suit, as it wasn’t only the eRX5 to climb in the ranking, as the BYD Tang is slowly stepping up production, climbing one position to #6.

The slow production ramp up of BYD is making itself known, now with three models in the Top 10, after the Qin EV300 shooting 11 positions to Ninth, its less fancy relative, the e5, also climbed significantly in the ranking, jumping seven positions to #10.

Looking at the manufacturers ranking, BAIC stays firmly in the lead, with 23% market share, now followed by a recovering BYD (16%), but also by SAIC (12%), which is starting to look as this year dark horse brand among Chinese EV makers.
